THE Friendly City Youth Ballet is in the final stages of preparation for its fifth annual Friendly City Dance Festival which runs from June 6 to 11 in Gqeberha.
The FCDF has been going from strength to strength over the years and even ‘lockdown’ could not stop their dancers as they went the virtual festival and online route in 2020.
With theatres now allowing 50% of capacity, the dancers are looking forward to taking to the stage, and dancing for those bronze, silver, and coveted gold awards.
Dancers participate in all dance genres which include, ballet, hip hop, tap, modern dance, rhythmic dance and national dance, and their 2022 adjudicator is fully versed in all these genres. Their adjudicator this year is Beverley Acquisto who is the owner of the Beverley Acquisto Studio of Dance (BASD) based in Waterkloof, Pretoria.
With over 600 festival entrants, the festival week kicks off at the Savoy Theatre on Monday June 6, and Tuesday June 7, when their ‘novice’ dancers will perform, before moving to the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex on Tuesday evening.
On Tuesday June 7, to Saturday June 11, their ‘Amateur’ dancers will perform items including solos, duets, trios, groups, and championship sections.
The festival culminates in a gala evening and awards ceremony on Saturday, June 11, at 18:30.
The evening will include a varied programme of top dance groups, with guest artists from Nelson Mandela University performing a vocal item; the McWilliams Academy of Dance will perform a crowd-pleasing Irish routine, and the audience will also enjoy an Argentinian tango performed by dancers from Feet On Fire Dance Academy.
