A young man from Nelson Mandela Bay has been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in the prestigious Manchester Cup and attend trials at various soccer clubs in London later this month.
Teagan McGregor, who plays for ProSkills Soccer Academy, will spend about a week in the UK from July 27 to August 4.
The 18-year-old said that he feels happy and blessed to have qualified to make the team and is optimistic about what lies ahead.
“Soccer is my passion and I have been playing the sport since the age of six. I feel that God has given me this talent, which I would like to use to my full potential,” Teagan said.
“This is a big talent exposure opportunity to be seen by international scouts. It would allow me to experience soccer at an international level and if scouted it would be a life-changing opportunity to play professionally,” he added.
Although these are exciting times for the McGregor family, Teagan’s parents have been struggling to raise the R31 000 that each player needs for the trip. His mother, Esteliique McGregor-Geduld, said that they have managed to raise most of the money but need some further assistance. “We are currently in desperate need of assistance. Thus far we have raised R20 000 through fund-raisers, donations, raffles and out of pocket payments.
“This opportunity would make a massive difference in our son’s life, his future, our family, the city and our national soccer team,” she said.
