Six couples from the Missionvale Care Centre’s ballroom dance group have been selected to compete in the interprovincial championship in Komani on September 17.
Linda van Oudheusden, marketing manager at the Missionvale Care Centre, said this was an excellent achievement and the young dancers were excited to flaunt their talent in the provincial competition.
“The dancers come from extremely impoverished families and cannot afford the attire and transport costs to get to Komani,” said Van Oudheusden.
To this end the Missionvale Care Centre hosted a gala dance fund-raiser on September 3, in the centre’s community hall.
Van Oudheusden said the trip will cost about R30 000 for the dancers.
“We would like to give them the opportunity to participate in the championship and call upon good Samaritans in the city to support the cause,” said Van Oudheusden.

The Missionvale Care Centre was established by the late Sister Ethel Normoyle and offers holistic upliftment and development programmes, health and wellness and education to the community. Ballroom dancing is one of many initiatives which are offered at the centre to promote self-esteem and keep the youth off the streets.
