JOE Slovo Primary School teacher, Landezwa Luvuno, is helping the elderly people in Motherwell Ward 54 by introducing them to sport.

Luvuno started her programme in 2021. She also recruited children and the youth to sport, with the aim of combating crime.

She said that sport should be used as a tool to unite the members of the community.

Luvuno said, “I started community mini-athletics programmes in Motherwell in 2021. I strongly believe that each ward should start athletics programmes in which elderly people, children and youth should be involved.

“These programmes should be used to promote mass participation in our wards. These programmes should also be used to promote a healthy lifestyle.

“In my programmes, I involve elderly people who take part in sport like netball and athletics. The children and youth are so enthusiastic and passionate about sport.”

Luvuno is a volunteer at Masibambane Service Centre, where she helps the elderly to take part in sporting activities during the afternoons and weekends.

“I feel very delighted to see the elderly people taking part in sport. My view is that each ward should organise a mini tournament for elderly people to play for enjoyment. I also feel that each ward should introduce the children to sport at the very young age. Then the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture should take our programmes into serious consideration,” concluded Luvuno.
