Suspect in possession of abalone arrested after high speed chase

Police arrested a 39-year-old man for the possession of abalone worth R250 000 in Brabant Road on Monday, September 19.

A high speed chase from Jeffreys Bay ended in Gqeberha yesterday afternoon, 19 September when police arrested a 39-year-old man for possession of abalone.

The suspect was caught in Brabant Road, Kabega Park with abalone in his possession with a street value of approximately R250 000.

According to Captain André Beetge, police spokesperson, it is
alleged that at about 11:00 members received information about
a suspicious Red Renault KWID, which was
soon spotted at 11:20 driving towards Jeffreys Bay on the R102 road. 

“When police members turned their vehicle around, the driver of the Renault KWID increased speed, which resulted in a vehicle chase that ensued along the R102, (the) N2 highway, Old Cape Road and finally ended in Brabant Road in Kabega Park, where the driver of the KWID lost control of the vehicle,” Beetge said.

Police then arrested the driver after he attempted to
flee by foot. 

Upon searching the vehicle,
police found large black bags containing
2 372 units of abalone worth thousands of Rands.

The 2 372 units of abalone
were confiscated by police.

“A possession of abalone case was opened and being investigated by the SAPS Kabega Park,” Beetge concluded.
