Two Makanda prisoners re-arrested, five still at large

Nelson Mandela Bay police have made a significant breakthrough in yesterday’s murder incident, in which a 22-year-old security official was fatally wounded in Gqabi Street, KwaNobuhle.

On October 19, a joint task team between the SAPS and Correctional Service officers re-arrested a suspect who escaped alongside six other inmates at Makhanda Correctional facility on October 18.  

The inmate was found hiding in the bushes between Joza and Committees in Makhanda around 22:00 while the first inmate was arrested in Bloemfontein on October 18. 

The seven prisoners escaped through a window at Makhanda Correctional facility at about 04:00 on October 18. 

According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the arrest of the two inmates has brought down the total of escapees who are still at large to five.

“The recaptured inmates are Simba Masinga and Bennet Kwarrie,” said Nkohli.

The remaining prisoners who are yet to be found and arrested include, Luvuyo September, Trymore Chauke, Nhamo Muyambo, Abraham Moyane and Francis Chitiyo.    

Police are urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of the escapees to contact the investigating officer, Detective Captain Glen Peter on 082 301 9427 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station.
