The memorial headstone erected at the scene where South African singer, Bles Bridges, died in a car accident 22 years ago, has been vandalised, allegedly for the umpteenth time.
The memorial site in Bloemhof in the North West province, is still frequently visited by nostalgic fans of the singer even decades after his death. He died on this road on March 24, 2000 when the vehicle he was travelling in, slid and overturned on the wet road.
The headstone was erected at the site to honour his life.
Bridges’s daughter, Sunette Bridges, took to social media to voice her sadness over the state of the memorial site.
Posting a picture of the vandalised site, with the headstone lying upside down, she said: “this is what my father’s memorial headstone just outside Bloemhof looks like, this after all the work that has been done by the FF+ to beautify the site.”
She added that she is not sure what the “poor soul” tried to do with the vandalism, because as beautiful and previous as the memorial headstone is, “it remains a memorial headstone and even if you, whoever you are, destroyed it, you will never in eternity erase my father’s legacy,” she said.
“It is a pity that we have to live with such people but it is what it is. My father lives in our hearts and his music is still in our ears and that will never change.”
Bridges’s wife, Leonie, added to this, saying that it is not the first time that the memorial site has been vandalised. She also thanked Omega Tombstones, who not only supported the family after her husband’s death, but “has repaired the memorial site more than once after senseless vandalism,” she said.
The company has offered to once again repair it for the family.
