Update

On the evening of October 23, the SAPS and Correctional Service officers managed to apprehend the third of seven inmates who escaped from a Makhanda Correctional facility on October 18.

According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, on October 23, at around 18:30, the team responsible for tracing and tracking the escapees received information about a possible escapee who had allegedly asked for food at a farming community in Seven Fountains.

“A task team immediately followed up the leads, and within 30 minutes, they re-arrested a third escapee, Trymore Chauke in Seven Fountains,” said Nkohli.

He said police are urging communities to continue alerting them about any suspicious person in their neighbourhoods, so that all these escapees can be arrested and once again be in custody.

On October 19, a joint task team between the SAPS and Correctional Service officers re-arrested a suspect who escaped alongside six other inmates at Makhanda Correctional facility on October 18.

The inmate was found hiding in the bushes between Joza and Committees in Makhanda around 22:00 while the first inmate was arrested in Bloemfontein on October 18.

The seven prisoners escaped through a window at Makhanda Correctional facility at about 04:00 on October 18.

According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the arrest of the two inmates has brought down the total of escapees who are still at large to five.

“The recaptured inmates are Simba Masinga and Bennet Kwarrie,” said Nkohli.
