THE Boardwalk Mall will be the place to be on November 19, when the Klinicare Global Diabetes 5km starts in the new outside amphitheatre, known as Sun Park.

The redeveloped mall will play host to the masses to bring awareness and funds for the Diabetes South Africa charity and highlight the risks associated with diabetes.

In line with Diabetes South Africa’s mission statement, the route will take participants on an easy-going 5km around the suburbs of Summerstrand with the goal of getting everyone out and active, while supporting the silent threat that is diabetes.

Every year more than 25% of the population suffer from the disease. Some of the world’s most famous people are known to have it, with names like Tom Hanks, Nick Jonas and famous tennis star, Billie Jean King, having had to live with it for years.

However, many people never find out that they are affected, and it is for this reason that the event will offer free testing for all who attend.

During registration on November 17 and 18, as well as during race day, a team from the Department of Health’s diabetes section will be around to do tests, which will take around 30 seconds, to inform people of their status. This is yet another way in which awareness is being raised.

Entry for the event is only R150 and includes a free Klinicare Global Diabetes 5km T-shirt. For extra encouragement, all kids under the age of 10 will be allowed to participate in the event free of charge and get themselves tested by the friendly nursing staff.

All prospective entrants can sign up for the event online at www.zsports.co.za/globalwalk.

The event will also cater for late entries, which will incur a R50 late entry fee.

At the finish line there will be medals and lucky draw prizes which will be handed over after the event.

Race packs for online entries can be collected at the Boardwalk Mall on November 17 between 11:00 and 14:00 and on November 18 between 12:00 and 18:00.
