The Gilbert & Sullivan Society has had an exciting year, producing six shows including the smash hit Matilda the Musical in the last school holidays.
The Savoy Theatre Workshops last January and July were also very popular and unearthed some standout young performers. After such a big year, G&S President, Rose Cowpar, was adamant that the society finish 2022 and launch into the new year with two exciting projects for young people.
In December there will be auditions for an all new production of Music! Movies! Magic! in January with a cast and choreographer all under 18. The final workshops for the year will run from December 9 to 23, 2022.
“One of the most exciting things about Matilda was the auditions when over 100 young people came to sing for their place in the show. Choosing just 25 of these talented kids was a challenge and it became clear that, as a community theatre company, G&S had to create opportunities for more young people to experience the thrill or being part of a show,” the statement read.
Movies! Music! Magic! directed by Rose Cowpar with Vocal Direction by Amanda Engelbrecht and Choreography Ashleigh-Maling Nel was born in 2015 and all three past productions were a hit with young and old alike.
“The school holidays are right around the corner and for over 90 years families all over the world have spent many happy hours watching the wonderful, animated movies that hold a special place in our hearts. Music! Movies! Magic! brings to life all your favourite children’s movies from the classics to the latest hits with over 20 wonderful songs.”
“G&S are looking for a cast of up to 30 young people including four to six strong soloists aged 15 and over, six younger soloists and an ensemble of singers, dancers and actors. Personality is key, experience or training is not a necessity and we aim to make the auditions and the show a fun and stress free environment.”
The auditions will consist of a drama workshop with everyone, a group singing audition and a group dancing audition. The song for these auditions will be taught on the day. Anyone who would like to audition for a solo should prepare a song from any animated movie that suits their voice and they will be asked to stay and sing again after the dance audition.
Auditions will be held on Sunday, December 4, from 13:00 at the Savoy Theatre. All auditionees must attend the full session.
The production will run from January 11 to the 15 and all cast members must be available for day time rehearsals at the Savoy Theatre from December 27 until the show starts. All young people who would like to audition should register by emailing pegandssociety@gmail.com giving their full name, age, and contact details. An Audition package is available.
