A man has died and another is in a critical condition after they unblocked and fell into a drain in Missionvale on Friday, January 13.
At approximately 14:00, sub-contractors were busy inside a drain at GG’s Ground when a blockage gave way and the drain started to flow. The strong suction pulled both workers into the pipe below the water.
Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that rescue workers from the SAPS and fire department managed to recover both victims. They were resuscitated and rushed to hospital.
During the early hours of Saturday morning, one person, approximately 23 years old, passed away while the other is still in hospital,” she said.
“The men were sub-contractors for the municipality and were busy unblocking a main raw sewage service drain when the incident occurred. The next-of-kin of the deceased is yet to be notified,” Naidu added.
SAPS Algoa Park detectives are investigating an inquest.
