VOLUNTEERS are being called upon once more, to continue making improvements to local beaches – starting with Sardinia Bay this weekend.

WESSA Algoa Bay Branch will host the first of their regular monthly alien-clearing events of the year at Sardinia Bay on Saturday, February 11, from 09:00 to 11:00.

“Our faithful volunteers are making a huge difference there because of the concerted effort in this one area.

“The improvement is very noticeable, and it is gratifying to see the impact we have already made in trying to prevent the spread of the Acacia cyclops (Rooikrans/Red Eye) on the dunes. We thank you all very much,” said Tim and Isobel Douglas-Jones of WESSA Algoa Bay Branch.

The declared category two alien invader is still seriously threatening the sensitive indigenous bush, though.

In removing these alien plants, the volunteers give the local vegetation a good chance to rehabilitate, and restore the natural balance to these coastal dunes.

Volunteers who join the clean-up on Saturday will need to bring along a bow saw or lopper (if possible), a hat, water and gloves. They will meet at the Sardinia Bay carpark.
