THE Grey High School u.18 boys’ basketball team played an impressive game against Zwide Eagles, beating their opponents 40–31 during the finals of the PE Comets 10th Annual Schools Basketball Tournament. The game took place at Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre on Saturday and saw Grey’s team lift the tournament trophy.

During the tournament’s round robin stage, it was not an easy road for the players because each team suffered a defeat. In a nail-biting first game, Grey High lost by a 36–35 margin to Zwide Eagles.

In their second game Grey restored their dignity, registering an emphatic 42–27 victory over Kingswood College.

Following their hard work, Kingswood gained a hard-fought 32–29 victory over Zwide Eagles.

In the finals, Grey meant business, defeating Zwide Eagles 40–31. Grey’s star player, Dean Grant, who contributed a lot for his team, received the Most Valuable Player trophy while his teammates, Kyran Bainer, Dave Oluwole and Sive Dube, went home with the trophies for being voted All-Stars of the tournament.

Eagles’ players, Tukela Nceka and Khaya Mali, also received trophies for being All-Stars.

The tournament winners went home with a trophy and gold medals, while the runners-up received a trophy and silver medals.

In the u.16 games Khwezilomso Comprehensive School won all their games, defeating PE Comets 44–27 and Grey High 44–36. Grey got better of PE Comets in their 45–21 victory.

Khwezilomso Comprehensive received a winners’ trophy while Grey High received the runners-up trophy and silver medals.

PE Comets president Sibongile Fondini thanked the parents who supported their children during the tournament.

“We at PE Comets, would like to encourage the learners to play basketball, and we also urge them to be serious with sport and education. The parents are always supportive.

“I would like to thank the parents and the schools, as well as the teams for allowing their children, learners and players to take part in the tournament,” said Fondini.

U/16 special awards:

Most valuable player: Eyam Meleni (Khwezilomso Comprehensive)

All stars: Oyama Bonani, Esethu Mathias and Simamkele Poti from Khwezilomso Comprehensive, and Hlumelo Stuurman and Eyama Mba from Grey High.
