Despite starting a day later than scheduled due to bad weather, the Nelson Mandela Bay Splash Festival commenced this morning, Saturday, April 8 with the “secret sunrise” and is currently in full swing.

Following strong gusts of wind that uprooted trees in certain parts of Nelson Mandela Bay yesterday, April 7, organisers of the festival, in association with SPAR, made careful considerations with a member of SAPS onsite and decided that it would be best to temporarily close the festival for part of Friday.

The municipality later announced that the festival would be closed for the whole day on Friday due to the excessively high winds.

“The safety of our patrons, employees and service providers is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, the extremely high winds necessitate that we close the site for today,” the NMBM said yesterday.

The organisers reiterated that the festival programme will continue as scheduled today and accommodations will be made for the attractions that were affected by the postponement of yesterday.

“We know that residents of Nelson Mandela Bay are disappointed, and we share their disappointment, however, this was unavoidable,” the NMBM said.

The festival started early this morning. Residents are urged to make their way to King’s Beach to join in on the festivities.
