Another police officer has been shot and killed in Motherwell at the weekend, merely four days after the first incident.

Sgt. Khayalethu Mbonomnyama (42), was shot outside Aya’s Tavern in Mgwalana Street at approximately 14:30 yesterday, May 7.

Hawks spokesperson, Capt. Yolisa Mgolodela, said that the motive for the shooting is still unknown.

“The sergeant was from the Swartkops Rapid Response Unit,” she said.

This incident comes as the community is still reeling from a shooting at the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, May 3, where Sgt. Mario Nel, who was performing duties as a court orderly, was disarmed and shot with his own gun.

Nel (42) died at the scene.

Provincial SAPS leadership, including the MEC for Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, visited Nel’s family yesterday to offer their condolences.
