THE well-organised New Brighton Football Association (NEBFA) Build-It u/13 Festival took place at New Brighton Oval on Saturday, with Jarvis Gqamlana Primary taking the honours on Saturday.
There were four primary schools and four NEBFA teams that took part in the tournament. The schools were Jarvis Gqamlana, Samuel Nongogo, Stephen Mazungula, and David Vuku. NEBFA was represented by PE United, City Defenders, KUBS and Roaring Tigers. The teams were divided into two groups.
Jarvis Gqamlana, Samuel Nongogo, PE United and City Defenders were in Group A; Bold Tigers, David Vuku, KUBS and Stephen Mazungula were in Group B.
Before the start of the game, the atmosphere was electrifying as Stephen Mazungula Primary School March and Drill Squad kept the fans entertained, and live music by the local DJ was another way of entertaining the fans.
The tournament started with a round robin format, ending in a knockout stage.
As Jarvis Gqamlana were Group A winners, they faced KUBS who won Group B. Jarvis Gqamlana were crowned as NEBFA Build-It u/13 Festival champions after they defeated KUBS 5–3 on penalties when their match ended a 2–2 tie.
Jarvis Gqamlana went home with a new kit, a trophy, gold medals, balls, bibs, kitbag and players bags, and the player of the tournament award went to their player. KUBS settled for silver medals, players’ bags and bibs. Korsten Build-It owner Anthony Vlok was over the moon, and said that the standard of the tournament was very high.
NEBFA president Mike Mambara thanked Korsten Build-It for helping develop grassroots soccer in the New Brighton community.
