RESIDENTS of Kensington in Nelson Mandela Bay will now have the opportunity to earn money for recycling after a Packa-Ching Mobile Recycling Unit was recently launched in the area.
With this project, residents can earn Kilorands for every waste item recycled. This money is then loaded onto a card that can be redeemed as vouchers at certain stores.
The Packa-Ching Recycling Project aims at creating awareness about, and providing education around, the environment and recycling.
It also encourages communities to clean up their immediate environments and brings recycling services closer to communities.
Residents can make money by rinsing their recyclables, separating them into different types, such as glass, paper, plastic and cans, and taking them to the Mobile Recycling Unit with payment sent to their cell phones.
As previously reported by PE Express, Packa-Ching uses the recycler’s cell phone number and date of birth for registration. The weight and type of recyclable material determine the Kilorands paid via e-wallet.
The registered recyclers receive a welcome SMS from Celbux, with a once-off user number and password, which are to be kept safe as they need the password to access the e-wallet.
The Kilorands can be redeemed at, among others, Usave, Clicks, Dis-chem, Shoprite, Checkers and Pick ’n Pay.
Ward 7 councillor, Brendon Pegram, said that he approached Packa-Ching because they have a big illegal dumping problem in the Kensington area, and it happens too often.
“Having Packa-Ching involved is a huge advantage for the community, because they can completely get rid o.f their wastsuppliede. They benefit in the sense that there won’t be all that waste lying around,” he said.
“What we want to tell communities is to bring their waste to us. Packa-Ching weighs and puts the money on your card. Packa-Ching is very professional. They drive around with this big van and teach people about recycling, and even have contracts with certain schools where they collect waste. They really are very keen on recycling.”
Pegram said that Packa-Ching will be stationed in Connaught Street from 09:00 to 11:00 on Wednesdays. Residents are encouraged to make use of this opportunity to collect and recycle their waste.
