NMB mayor resolves two month non-payment of IPTS staff

The IPTS bus service has resumed operations.

The non-payment of Spectrum Alert staff, the managing company of the Integrated Public Transport System of the Cleary Park – Central Business District Route, was resolved by Executive Mayor Gary van Niekerk and his management team on June 9.

Libhongulethu bus drivers, cleaners, ticket office and auxiliary personnel, closed off the Gqeberha City Hall and the intersection of Baakens Street and John Kani Road due to the non-payment of salaries for the last two months.

The dispute follows a decision three months ago to change the flow of capital of the Libhongulethu bus service, but administrative difficulties resulted in outstanding payments.

While addressing employee representatives in his office, van Niekerk apologised for the administrative bungle and assured the workers they will get paid by June 12.

City Manager Noxolo Nqwazi and Chief Operating Officer Christopher Dyani assisted van Niekerk to speed up the process and to ensure that it does not happen again.

“We cannot be talking about bringing change as a newly elected administration and yet we are ignoring your plight. You will not be treated as if your personal circumstances do not matter,” said van Niekerk.

“I became aware of the outstanding payment this past week, and now you are here to demonstrate at City Hall. It cannot be okay for staff to go without salaries for two months. You worked hard for your money and you will get what is due to you.”

The group dispersed shortly before 13:00 after van Niekerk’s address.
