SITUATED in the heart of Richmond Hill, the Westbourne Oval Stadium, steeped in history and culture, is getting a makeover. Its once-neutral external walls are soon to be adorned by colourful murals, signifying the historical significance of the area.

This exciting initiative is driven by the collaborative efforts of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum and the Richmond Hill Special Rates Association.

Not only is the Oval a historic centre of sports excellence dating from 1899, but the suburb of Richmond Hill is also filled with cultural heritage.

The murals will reflect the creative and diversified aspects of the Richmond Hill community, and will also represent and emphasise the stadium as an important part of the city’s sport heritage.

A group of artists and designers, each getting a six to 12 metre section of the exterior stadium wall to paint, will work together in this vibrant and exciting venture.

Painter and artist, Elton Jantjies, full-time Helenvale artist, Ricardo Swanepoel, and his son, Ricardo Snyers, were the first artists who started work this week on the Westbourne Oval stadium wall.
