Alexander Road High School recently had a day of celebration as both the Alex boys and girls’ soccer teams were crowned champions at the inaugural Super Soccer Schools tournament, hosted by Urban Academy from April 25 to 27.
The girls’ team advanced through the group stages undefeated, scoring an impressive total of 21 goals. In the championship match, they delivered an excellent performance, beating Victoria Park 2 – 0 with calm and composed football.
Throughout the tournament, the Alex girls showcased great skill, determination, and teamwork, sealing a memorable victory and underlining their status as champions.
The Alex boys’ journey to glory was a true story of resilience. After suffering a narrow loss in the early rounds, they fought back bravely, winning their remaining matches with determination to reach the final.
In the boys’ final match, drama unfolded in thrilling fashion. Facing a strong Ndzondelelo High School side, Alex took an early lead and appeared set for a narrow victory.
However, Ndzondelelo equalised with a penalty kick in the dying seconds of normal time, sending the match into a tense penalty shootout.
Undeterred, Alex held their nerve, converting four penalties to Ndzondelelo’s one (4 – 1) in the shootout to secure the title.
Delray Woods and Caiden Adams were recognised as the Rising Star and Player of the Tournament, respectively. The Alex boys’ goalkeeper, Onwaba Mki, was named the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament, while Damien Freeks walked away with the Player of the Tournament award in the boys’ section.
The double victory capped off a remarkable tournament for Alex, whose teams displayed resilience, talent, and a true fighting spirit. Both teams will now advance to the Super Soccer Schools National Tournament, set to be held in August.
