A collaboration between Gqeberha Flying Squad and SAPS Walmer members resulted in the recovery of three hijacked vehicles and the apprehension of four suspects on Saturday, October 14, within a short space of time in Gqeberha.
According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu,it is alleged that at about 23:30, Flying Squad members responded to a tracker alert of an Isuzu bakkie that was hijacked in New Brighton. The bakkie was recovered abandoned in Gamlana Street in New Brighton. With the assistance of SAPS Walmer, observation duties were held to see whether any suspect/s returned to the vehicle.
While doing observation on the vehicle, a report was received of another vehicle, a Nissan Micra being hijacked in Kwazakele. Two members proceeded to follow the activation signal and found the vehicle, abandoned in Soga Street, Soweto on Sea.
“Shortly, a Ford Fiesta was also reported hijacked in New Brighton. The vehicle drove into the street where police were keeping observation. The suspects spotted the unmarked police vehicle and sped off. A chase ensued and the suspects started shooting at police,” Naidu said.
Police retaliated and the suspect lost control and hit a pole in Chase Drive in Young Park. Four suspects were apprehended and a firearm which was later established to be a replica firearm was recovered.
One suspect sustained gunshot wounds to his head while another sustained injuries as a result of the accident and the other two suspects did not sustain any injuries. The fifth suspect managed to flee.
The recovered hijacked vehicles were impounded for further investigation.
“The suspects, aged between 25 and 30 years old are detained on charges of attempted murder (attack on police), possession of a hijacked vehicle, pointing of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and reckless and negligent driving. They are expected to appear in the New Brighton magistrate court soon,” Naidu added.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Ronald Koll applauded the outstanding performance of the Flying Squad and SAPS Walmer members in combatting hijackings in the metro.
“Their exceptional courage and resilience shone through despite being shot at in the line of duty. Hijackings are a growing concern; however we remain vigilant and proactive in addressing this threat. The actions of these members highlight the relentless efforts of our men and women in blue towards ensuring the safety of our community’s,” Koll concluded.
