Two-time cancer survivor, Michael Wynne from Scottsville, Kraaifontein, in the Western Cape, recently hiked from Cape Town to Gqeberha to raise awareness on cancer.
“I am 60 years old, and in 2018 I decided to start this journey of hiking after my own struggles with cancer,” said Wynne.
Previously diagnosed with stage four prostate and colon cancer, Wynne often hikes from suburb to suburb to bring awareness to the disease, and to others who live with it.
He recently walked from Kraaifontein to the Northern Cape, from Kraaifontein to Upington and Springbok, and most recently from Cape Town to Gqeberha.
“The goal is to raise awareness and fund cancer patients in desperate need. I got invited to deliver a speech in Port Elizabeth, and I’m also doing a tribute to people that have cancer.
“Although I’m not familiar with this route, it was exciting for me, because of the challenge it poses. I handed out 100 ribbons to people with cancer on the journey.
“Doing this challenge was very hard, but at the end of the day I got to make people happy or motivate them, and let them know they can do it because this struggle is not easy. For this you must have the courage to face difficulties,” Wynne added.
Though he’s just finished a gruelling hike, Wynne is looking forward to the next one.
“For as long as I am alive and well, I will always do whatever I can to be of service to others, and to help raise awareness and funds for those who need them the most,” he concluded.
