An investigation has been launched following the theft of a state vehicle by five armed men at the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) offices in Bhisho, Eastern Cape, in the early hours of today, February 27.

Eastern Cape Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the incident occurred at about 01:30.

Reporting on the incident, Binqose said that five men allegedly dressed in balaclavas and armed with firearms entered the premises. Three of them held security personnel hostage, while the other two demanded to be shown the fleet management office, where they found a key to a white double-cab Nissan Navara (license plate: GGL 472 EC) and used official tags to drive off with it.

“No one was harmed in the incident,” he added.

Binqose highlighted that this marks the 10th incident where state vehicles have been stolen or hijacked this year.
