Port Alfred Police are concerned about the recent increase in online fraud cases reported over the last month and a half, when 14 cases have been reported.
According to the police spokesperson, Captain Marius McCarthy, the same modus operandi was used in all of these cases.
” Victims are called on their cell phones and informed that fraudulent activities occur on their bank account. The suspect will have all the victim’s details, so the victim does not suspect anything,” said McCarthy.
” The suspect then asks the victim to confirm their identity number and to supply them with an OTP number.
“A few minutes later, money is withdrawn from their bank account,” McCarthy added.
The Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Zolani Xawuka, is appealing to the public to be cautious when buying items online and not to accept any help from bystanders when withdrawing money at the ATM, as cards are exchanged without you noticing. Your hard-earned cash is withdrawn at another ATM.
