Six people passed away and another six people were seriously injured in a gruesome vehicle accident on the M17 highway between Motherwell and Kwazakele early this morning, December 2, at about 01:30.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, the accident was a head-on collision between a white Toyota Hilux bakkie and a white VW Golf.
“The bakkie was driving from Motherwell in the direction of Kwazakele while the VW Golf was driving in the direction of Motherwell when the collision occurred,” said Beetge.
He said both women (driver and passenger) in the bakkie died on the scene, while two boys aged 6 and 12 on the back of the bakkie passed away on the scene.
Beetge said a further six men on the back of the bakkie were seriously injured and taken to Dora Nginza Hospital.
He said the two men in the VW Golf also passed away on the scene.
“The cause of the accident is being investigated, but a strong suspicion exists that high speed and alcohol were contributing factors,” said Beetge.
He further said a culpable homicide case was opened and is being investigated by SAPS Swartkops.
Beetge said the names of people involved are being withheld until all identifications have been done and their next of kin has been notified.
