Scores of supporters and parents watched the successful JB Magongo Golf Foundation Challenge that took place at Port Elizabeth Golf Club in Mill Park on December 26, 2023.
A total of 140 golfers, who comprised 80 adults and 40 juniors, took part in the tournament. The sponsors that injected funds to make the event the greatest sport event on the Eastern Cape golf calendar were Nedbank, Nalitha Fishing Group, Ucoceko Water Projects, MNT Group (Pty) Ltd, Trencon Construction, Sanlam, Echalar Fishing, Maxhosa Africa, and AOS Engineers.
The golfers came from as far as Adelaide, Port Alfred, King Williams Town, Hankey, Makhanda, Somerset East, Kariega and Gqeberha.
JB Magongo Sport Foundation founder, Reverend Rubin Magongo, revealed that his foundation’s aim was to identify and develop talent in less fortunate communities.
Magongo also revealed that his foundation, which started in 2019, was named after his father Julius Bonakele Magongo, a star black golfer in the 1950s.
JB Magongo Sport Foundation director, Noxolo Magongo, highlighted that all the participants were so enthusiastic, including the Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor, Gary van Niekerk, who promised to support the foundation in their next tournament.
Magongo thanked all the sponsors, volunteers, administrators, players and supporters who made the tournament a resounding success.
There were lots of prizes up for grabs, including bursaries for children, electrical appliances, trophies, medals and some lucky draws.
