Scores of spectators converged at different venues to watch the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Hollywood Bets Men’s Regional League games on Saturday and Sunday.
The Madibaz Football side suffered a 2–1 home defeat to Dynamos at South Campus in Summerstrand on Saturday. Red City played their hearts out when they collected three league points in their 1–0 victory over Red Lions at Chevrolet Stadium. Bay Tigers defeated Eleven Stars 3–1 at Veeplaas Turf Stadium on Saturday.
Despite their 1–0 loss, Highland Spurs put up a good fight against EC Celtics in a home game at Jabavu Stadium on Saturday. New Brighton Academy succumbed 3–2 to the gutsy Camper United at Chevrolet Stadium on Saturday as well.
Port Elizabeth FC disappointed Royal Bucks’ supporters after they hammered Motherwell NU 11 side 3–1 at Gelvan Fields on Saturday. The game between Real Madrid and Roaring Tigers ended in a 2–2 draw at Walmer Community Fields on Saturday as well.
SAFA NMB Hollywood Bets Men’s Regional League log leaders Old Grey continued their winning ways by overcoming Stinging Bees 1–0 at SAPS Main Grounds on Saturday.
The unbeaten Khipu Major Chiefs Sports Club accumulated a hard-fought 3–2 home victory when they faced Despatch Pioneers at Zwide Stadium on Sunday.
Nelson Mandela Masters & Legends Association host pre-season games
Long-awaited games played by yesteryear players were hosted by Nelson Mandela Bay Masters & Legends Association at Motherwell NU 9 Community Grounds, Chatty Community Grounds, and Young Romans Grounds on Sunday.
These pre-season games were hosted with the aim of preparing the teams for the coming season. At Motherwell NU 9, three games were played. Fans saw Sparks defeat their rivals Villagers 2–1 during the first game. The newcomers Motherwell All Stars caught Eleven Attackers by surprise, after they hammered them 3–0 during the second game at Motherwell NU 9 Community Grounds.
PE Eleven Masters ensured a baptism of fire for Algoa Bus Company after they overcame them 2–1 during a tough game at Motherwell NU 9 Community Grounds. At Chatty Grounds the rookies, Chatty Masters, made their presence felt when they handed Joe Slovo an easy 4–0 defeat.
BOP Masters gave a good account of themselves after they secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory against AmaUnits at Young Romans Grounds in KwaZakhele.
VW Masters’ supporters saw their side thumped 4–2 by the newcomers, Chathaza Masters, at Young Romans Grounds. Fans were kept on their feet when Zwide Masters played to 1–1 draw against Winners.
11th edition PE Comets Schools Basketball Tournament
All roads led to Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre when the 11th edition of the PE Comets Schools Basketball Schools Basketball Tournament took place on Saturday.
According to PE Comets president, Sibongile Fondini, the tournament was the right platform to develop the youth in basketball, and also to promote basketball as sport. The tournament was organized for u/16 and u/18 boys.
Khwezi Lomso Comprehensive High School were crowned champions for the third time after they hammered the Makhanda outfit Kingswood College 46–20 in the u/16 final.
PE Comets secured a narrow 41-40 victory when they locked horns with Grey High School during their u/18 final. The winners in each age group received a floating trophy and gold miniature trophies. The runners-up settled for silver miniature trophies in each age group.
“The technical officials and the parents made this tournament a resounding success. We are winners only because we have some amazing schools,” said Fondini. “You all took the meaning of teamwork to a completely great level. I would like express thanks to our club members for dedicating their time in making this tournament the success that it is now.”
