Eastern Cape dam levels record marginal decrease, residents urged to use water sparingly

The Department of Water and Sanitation in Eastern Cape has called on residents to continue using sparingly as the province’s storage capacity has marginally decreased from last week’s 82.7% to 81.8%. This is according to a weekly dam levels report complied by the Department on a weekly basis.

In a media statement issued by The Department of Water & Sanitation, it has been reported that the Algoa Water Supply System has experienced a decrease, dropping from 73.5% to 72.5% compared to the previous week. Similarly, the Kouga Dam situated on the Kouga River has seen a decline from 91.4% to 89.8% over the same period.

” The Loerie Dam has also witnessed a slight decrease, moving from 79.3% to 74.9% this week, while the Haarlem Dam’s water level currently stands at 83.5%, down from the previous week’s 86.5%.

“Meanwhile, Rooikrans Dam on the Buffalo River is at 99.0% from 99.5%, Nahoon Dam is down from last week’s 94.7% to 93.9% in the current week. Also, on the Buffulo River, Bridle Drift Dam has subsided from 99.5% to 98.2% and Laing Dam is at 99.8% full capacity as recorded last week,” the statement said. 

“Nuwejaars Dam has emptied at 15.5%, Darlington and Nqweba dams have recorded below average percentages at 32.1% and 45.2% respectively,” the statement added. 

“The Department has further called on residents to report and fix household water leaks, while measures are taken to effectively implement bulk water projects across the province and the country.”
