When South Africa commemorated Human Rights Day last week, the Nelson Mandela Bay YMCA, a local non-profit organisation, embraced the spirit of the occasion by extending a helping hand to the most vulnerable members of the community in Gqeberha’s Northern Areas.

In a poignant gesture aimed at addressing the pressing issues of inequality and poverty, the Nelson Mandela Bay YMCA organised a soup day at their Parkside-based centre.

This initiative not only provided nourishment, but also served as a powerful symbol of empathy and solidarity, emphasising the fundamental rights and dignity of every individual.

The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including the homeless, hungry day labourers, and children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Against the backdrop of societal disparities, the act of sharing a simple meal took on profound significance, highlighting the importance of compassion and community support.

Lerato Lebopo, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay YMCA, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to promoting equality and inclusivity within the community.

“Human Rights Day is more than just a public holiday for us, it’s a call to action,” Lebopo said. “Through initiatives like the soup kitchen, we aim to foster a sense of belonging and unity, while addressing the systemic inequalities that persist in our communities,” she added.

The Nelson Mandela Bay YMCA is dedicated to empowering young people through various outreach programmes. These initiatives include youth development programmes in local schools, which equip students with essential life and leadership skills.

Additionally, the organisation collaborates with the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development on a substance abuse prevention programme, educating youth about the harmful effects of substance use and abuse.
