Kyle Pienaar (12), a local learner involved with serving the under-privileged since the age of seven, was recently recognised for his hard work when the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth South rewarded him with a Community Service Award.
Pienaar followed in the footsteps of his aunt, Mandy Volschenk, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth South. He has been involved with many of the club’s projects, as well as his own.
“Kyle knows all about assembling parcels and gifts for the under-privileged, and is well-versed in ‘building’ hamburgers and the perfect hotdog for our PE South Club various missions,” said Antoinette Esterhuyse, President of Rotary Club Port Elizabeth South.
She further said that Pienaar never shies away from being confronted with the sad reality of poverty and emotional pain suffered by destitute individuals, something even some adults find very difficult to handle.
He also helps with matters concerning two of a number of safe houses in the local community.
“Kyle’s compassion is not limited to assisting Rotary Club projects, but also extends as far as the ‘love sandwich’ initiative which was run last year by the junior school he attends. He himself created 140 school lunch sandwiches that were handed out to under-privileged children!
“Both the wider community and Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth South can attest to this brave, humanity-focused young man’s ethos, of service above self,” Esterhuyse concluded.
