QUMBU, Eastern Cape -A fatal shooting at a pharmacy in Qumbu claimed the life of a 26-year-old man and left another person injured, while a third escaped unharmed.

Police are investigating a murder case and two counts of attempted murder following the shooting at a pharmacy in the Sejoseng Business Centre yesterday.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said officers were called to the scene at about 11.20 after reports of an active shooting.

“Upon arrival, officers found a 26-year-old man lying deceased behind the counter,” said Gantana.

She added that two other people survived the attack. One sustained injuries to the lower body and was taken to a medical facility for treatment, while the second escaped without physical injuries.

According to police, the three victims had arrived at the pharmacy to buy masks when gunfire suddenly erupted.

“As they attempted to enter, gunfire erupted. The victims took cover inside and the shooting continued for some time before the suspect(s) fled,” Gantana said. Nothing was stolen from either victims or the pharmacy.

Crime scene investigators recovered multiple rifle cartridges, projectiles and sealed bullets at the scene.

The motive for the shooting has not yet been established and no arrests have been made.

Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit information through the MySAPS App. Information will be treated confidentially.
