EASTERN CAPE – The N2 between Ndabakazi and the Kei Cuttings has been partially reopened to traffic following a serious oil tanker accident that caused major disruptions and hazardous driving conditions last night, 12 May.

According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, cleanup operations are still underway after an oil tanker reportedly lost control, overturned, and spilled a substantial quantity of oil onto the roadway.

The department said the spillage created “extremely hazardous driving conditions” for motorists, prompting the immediate closure of the affected stretch while emergency teams worked to contain and clear the oil.

While traffic is now moving through parts of the route, authorities warned that conditions remain dangerous in certain sections.

“While the road has been partially reopened to traffic, conditions remain hazardous in certain sections as cleanup operations continue following the oil spillage last night,” the department said.

The department further warned that oil residue may still resurface on the road surface, particularly around the Kei Cuttings, which could continue posing risks to drivers.

“We urge them to continue reducing speed and exercising caution on the Kei Cuttings in general, as that oil residue may resurface and cause more problems in the future,” the department added.
