GQEBERHA – Police arrested 11 suspects, issued fines and seized drugs and suspected stolen property during Operation Shanela II in KwaZakhele this week.
The operation, carried out on 16 April, forms part of ongoing efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to tackle violent crime and improve safety in the area.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said officers focused on liquor outlets, second-hand goods dealers and busy roads as part of Operation Shanela II.
Two roadblocks were set up, with traffic fines totalling R24,000 issued.
Among those arrested was a suspect linked to a murder committed in September last year. Other arrests were made for drug possession and the illegal sale of liquor.
Police also issued three compliance notices to tavern owners found to be operating outside the law.
During the operation, officers confiscated mandrax tablets and recovered 10 cellphones, as well as a replica firearm believed to be linked to criminal activity.
In addition, 179 people and 58 vehicles were stopped and searched.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo praised officers for their efforts, saying operations like these play an important role in the fight against crime.
“These kinds of interventions help reduce crime and make communities feel safer,” he said.
