Members of MJ’s Judo Dojo in Walmer have returned to South Africa after competing in the prestigious SANIX International Juvenile Judo Team Championships and training tour in Japan.

Sensei Reece Kramer travelled as coach and manager, representing MJ’s Judo Dojo, the Sarah Baartman Judo Association and South Africa. He described the experience as an honour and praised the exceptional organisation and professionalism of the event.

“The competition reflected the true principles of judo — efficiency, discipline and respect,” said Kramer. “What stood out most was the passion shared by judoka from around the world, which created meaningful connections beyond the sport.”

Young judoka, Tiffany Botes, performed strongly, defeating competitors from several countries, including Korea and Japan. Kramer highlighted her growth throughout the tour, noting improved grip work, greater control and resilience in competition.

“Tiffany showed maturity and determination, learning from every match and coming back stronger each time,” he said.

Botes described the experience as both challenging and rewarding. “It was hard work, but very exciting. Stepping onto the mat in Japan made me realise how far my judo journey has come.”

The tour included intensive training sessions and seminars with world-class athletes, including Ryuju Nagayama, currently ranked fifth in the world in the -60kg category. Botes said the exposure inspired her to work harder and pursue her long-term goal of becoming a sensei.

Both coach and athlete emphasised the importance of international exposure for the development of judo in South Africa, encouraging younger judoka to seize opportunities to compete and train abroad.
