Lorraine Primary School started majorettes nearly two years ago, to compete in an Eastern Cape Majorette and Cheerleading Association event.
They are the only school in Gqeberha boasting a team.
In a short time together they have already celebrated qualifying for the SA Majorette and Cheerleading Association Nationals, held in Durban last year. Their coach, Francisca Bester, an ex-drummie herself, hopes to take her team to the nationals again this year.
“Ultimately, we are hoping that this event will highlight that majorettes are still alive and well as a sport. The nationals are a huge event, and hopefully other schools in town will look at offering this sport again. We’re also hoping for a great turn-out to ensure we are given the opportunity of hosting future competition as well.
“Further into the year routines such as mace, baton, and small and large drills (all items) are added. We would love to host a full routine event in town, maybe even the nationals some day,” said Bester.
According to her, the competition has not been held in Gqeberha since the early 1990s, but this is all to change this year.
The Eastern Cape Majorette and Cheerleading Association event will be hosted at Lorraine Primary School Pavilion this Saturday, April 27, and will showcase the non-prop and flag drill routines.
The association recently added cheerleading to their routines, with junior, high school, and two tertiary teams competing. The event starts at 11:00 and attendees can look forward to food trucks and merchandise suitable for the whole family.
Tickets will be made available at the gate at R10 per person.
