The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police arrested a 37-year-old man in Central, Gqeberha, on Monday, 20 May, during a raid at a liquor establishment in Parliament Street.

In a media statement, Nelson Mandela Bay municipal spokesperson Mamela Ndamase, said the arrest came as Metro Police officers were conducting a stop and search operation in the area and they received a tip-off regarding an alleged drug dealer.

She said Metro Police Acting Commissioner, Advocate Andrew Moses, stated upon arrival at the bar lounge, the officers searched the man and caught him on the spot in possession of cocaine, tik, mandrax and dagga.

“The arrest happened around 14:00, we can confirm that the suspect is a foreign national, and he had no identity document or passport at the time of the arrest. We caught him red handed with 35 small bags of cocaine, 16 bags of tik, 57 and a half tablets of mandrax and about 43 grams of dagga. The suspect was detained at Humewood Police Station.”

In another incident, an additional 37 bags of cocaine were found under a brick on Parliament Street.

“We learnt that the drug dealers sometimes hide drugs under bricks and indeed we found some drugs there today.

“We commend our officers for their continued commitment in fighting crime in our City. It’s a warning to other drug dealers in our City that their time is up now,” added Moses.
