A promising Schauderville-born rugby star in the making, Christopher Dennis (18), who attends Wolmaransstad High School, has been invited to participate in the u/19 Arthur Johnson Sport Week tour in France and Italy at the end of September.
Dennis has been active in sport since the age of 9, playing cricket, soccer, athletics, and rugby. Not only has he been active, but he has also excelled in athletics, and captained various school level rugby teams. The young fly-half was included in the 2023 Leopards Craven Week for his outstanding performance.
Seen as an all-round sportsman, his inclusion in the Travel and Sport’s u/19 team came as no surprise.
The tour, which is organised by leading school tour operator, Travel and Sport, costs R54 760 per player, which is subject to change based on the exchange rate.
Dennis’s father, Clint, a truck driver, explained that the funds needed for the tour are beyond their means as he tries to make ends meet daily.
The fundraising efforts so far have included a meat raffle, and they are planning a Golden Oldies dance soon, but these humble efforts would need a huge boost to get to the total sum that is needed.
“I hereby ask for any donations to help me in making my son’s dream come true,” he said.
“I am the only one working for my children, and I have no other source of income. I do have a teenage daughter that I am taking care of as well.”
“I want my son to make a success of his life. This would make a huge impact on the community itself, as well as him, being an example to other youth, to follow in his footsteps,” he added.
With no other financial assistance, he explained how not being able to help his son is taking a personal toll.
“Being the father of such a talented, promising player and athlete, especially of such a calibre, saddens me because I cannot assist him in this tour. I feel that this would be a step forward for him and I want my son to prosper in life. We would like to see this happen as this could be the cultivation of a future Springbok from our home turf,” Clint said.
Dennis said he was elated when he found out that he was chosen to participate in this tour.
“It has always been my dream to go overseas, and I believe that this tour could open huge doors for me.”
