NETCARE Greenacres Hospital recently marked International Nurses’ Day in a vibrant and festive manner, with the entire nursing staff dressed in bright purple t-shirts, tutu skirts, and funky sunglasses.
The event aimed at honourjng the dedication and hard work of nurses, highlighting the essential role they play in healthcare and the positive impact they have on patients’ lives.
One of the hospital’s long-serving registered nurses, Linda Bailey, who has been at Netcare Greenacres for 15 years, shared her thoughts on the importance of recognising nurses’ work.
“Nurses bring change to the lives of their patients, and it’s crucial that we celebrate their commitment,” she said.
Although Bailey does not have one specifically memorable patient, as all her patients leave a mark, she finds great satisfaction in caring for the elderly, who often express deep gratitude for the care they receive.
“Many of them don’t want to leave the hospital or be moved,” she added, reflecting on the special bond that develops between nurses and patients.
Bailey’s journey as a nurse took a challenging turn two years ago, when she was diagnosed with lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy. During this difficult time, she found unwavering support from her colleagues at the hospital.
“The staff here are like family; they supported me throughout my healing journey,” she said.
This sense of unity helped Bailey through her treatment and recovery.
It’s no surprise, then, that she’s not looking forward to retiring in eight years.
“I love them all, and I don’t even want to think of retiring.” she said with a smile.
The celebration at Netcare Greenacres Hospital was filled with energy and joy, with music and dancing bringing life. Healthy snacks were served, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to promoting well-being among its staff and patients. The event was not only a moment to celebrate the nurses, but also an opportunity for them to connect, relax, and enjoy the recognition they deserve.
“Linda Bailey’s story is a testament to the strength and resilience of nurses and the deep connections they form with their patients and colleagues,” said Adéle Kennedy, the hospital’s Marketing Manager. “It’s a reminder that nurses are not just healthcare providers, they are also the heart of any hospital, bringing care, compassion, and comfort to those who need it most.”
“I would definitely encourage the younger generation to consider a career in the nursing field, but only if they have the heart for it,” said Bailey, before joining her colleagues in the celebrations. “Nursing needs a deep sense of care for others.”
