Early this morning (May 28), the Public Order Policing (POP) unit of the South African Police Service (SAPS) were dispatched to Old Mission Road in the Westville, Kwadwesi Extension, Gqeberha, in response to a service delivery protest. The protest, which began around 05:15, saw residents voicing their frustrations over the lack of ablution facilities in the community.

The situation escalated when protestors stoned an Algoa bus, subsequently setting it alight. No injuries were reported from the incident.

“MMC Mafani arrived on the scene to address the gathered residents, and the situation has since been brought under control. POP units will remain in the area to ensure continued stability and to monitor the situation closely,” Colonel Priscilla Naidu of SAPS said.

Naidu further urged residents to remain calm and to use peaceful means to express their grievances.
