Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene is urging police members and all motorists to be extra cautious while driving on the extremely wet roads in the province.

The heavy rains have claimed the life of a police Constable from the Anti-Gang Unit in Gqeberha on the R75 – Despatch Road. It is alleged that at about 18:20, Constable Elroy May (39) was a passenger in the police vehicle when their vehicle overturned due to the bad weather conditions.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu of the South African Police Services said, “The tarmac was very wet and the rain was pelting. According to a witness, the driver of the state vehicle lost control and rolled against the embankment and then landed on its roof. Constable May died on the scene. A culpable homicide case is opened for investigation.”

Mene expressed her sadness of losing a member due to the extreme weather condition in the province. “Over the past few days, heavy rains and flooding  have caused significant disruptions and damage across multiple areas. We, the SAPS extend our heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family, friends and colleagues.”

She also warned residents, that in the light of the current conditions, they are urged to exercise extreme caution. “If possible, please stay home and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary. The roads in many areas are flooded and washed away thus posing a significant danger to drivers. The safety of our community is our top priority.

We are working tirelessly with Disaster Management at the municipalities to monitor the situation and provide assistance where needed. If you must travel, please be vigilant and aware of your surroundings. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas, as the depth and strength of the water can be deceptive and potentially life-threatening,” Mene concluded.
