Mark Marshall, a passionate and well-known conservationist, and owner of Sandula Conservation, has launched his new children’s book, The Cocoon.
This vibrant and engaging story follows the journey of Emma, a young and nature-loving girl who discovers a cocoon and learns about the wonders of nature.
Upon finding an unusual object in her garden, Emma turns to her knowledgeable Uncle Mark for guidance. Readers of all ages will join Emma on her adventure as she learns about nature and the life cycle of the emperor moth. The book, written by Mark Marshall and illustrated by Bradford Marshall, also benefits from the creative support of Lauren Marshall.
The book touches on several important themes, introducing children to the concept of metamorphosis in an easily understandable way, and fostering a love for nature and confidence in the natural process through Emma’s patience in waiting to see what happens to the cocoon.
Beyond his work in conservation, Marshall is dedicated to educating young minds through Sandula Kids, a branch of Sandula Conservation. This initiative offers a range of educational and informative talks for schools, birthday parties, and events. Known fondly as “Uncle Mark” by the children he works with, Marshall’s calm and engaging way of communicating about nature resonates with both children and adults alike.
“This book means a great deal to me, but I hope it means more to the children. We need to teach them to care about their natural surroundings at a young age. I hope this book is a step towards that direction,” Marshall said.
In addition to the book, Marshall also recently launched a limited-edition TV series, Mark Marshall: Nature Guide, on the People’s Weather Channel (OpenView Channel 115), further expanding his efforts to educate and inspire a love for nature among children. The Cocoon is available for purchase online through Sandula Conservation’s website: https://www.sandula.co.za/.
