A woman (18) and a man were shot dead, and three were injured when five men with balaclavas and masks shot at patrons in a tavern in Walmer township late last night, June 16.
According to police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, police responded to a complaint that occurred at a tavern on Bhabhatane Street at about 23:20. According to information, about five men entered the tavern and started shooting at the patrons. The men all wore balaclavas or masks, covering their faces.
An 18-year-old woman and a man (age unknown), along with two other men and a woman, were injured. The motive and suspects are unknown at this stage.
In a media statement, Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. Nomthetheleli Mene said she is deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic shooting that occurred on Youth Day, a public holiday meant to celebrate and honor the youth of our nation. The Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit is investigating two cases of murder and three of attempted murder. Lt. Gen. Mene has called on the team of specialized investigators to leave no stone unturned and to ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and held accountable.
“We appeal to the community for assistance in this critical investigation and are urging anyone with information related to this incident to come forward. Your cooperation is vital in helping us solve this case and prevent further violence in our community,” added Lt. Gen. Mene.
