When Bethelsdorp teen, Jevano Hector, started playing rugby at the age of 13, he was too young to know that he would grow to consider a career in the sport, “but I always knew I loved it. There’s just something about being on the field, and playing the beautiful game,” the 17-year-old said.

Samentha Hector, his mother, was not too crazy at first about the idea of her precious son taking part in a sport that could possibly leave him injured, but with her son’s determination and talent, and his father, Jerry Hector’s motivation, she soon grew fond of the idea that her son was so passionate about something good.

“Rugby means everything to me; it’s not just a sport, but a way of life. I started playing rugby in Grade 7, and from the very first moment I fell in love with the intensity, camaraderie, and physicality of the game. It has taught me valuable life lessons, like teamwork, perseverance, and respect,” he said.

Hector, a Hoërskool Wolmaransstad learner, quickly proved that his skills were worth noticing, when he was among a few high school learners in the country selected to represent his school and South Africa at the prestigious u/19 Arthur Johnson Sport week in Italy and France, from September 20 to September 29 this year.

“I am incredibly excited for this opportunity, because it could mean I get to express my passion and show my talent,” enthused the teen; excited for the possibility of showcasing his skills on international fields.

“Representing a team and competing at a higher level is something I have always dreamt of. It’s a chance to push myself further, learn from experienced players, and test my abilities against the best. It’s an honour that I am ready to embrace with enthusiasm and dedication.”

It will be his first time travelling abroad!

However, taking part in this tour comes with associated costs, and Hector is pleading with the community for support and donations to help cover the expenses.

The total cost of the tour amounts to R54 760, which includes travel, accommodation, meals, and other related expenses.

“I am reaching out to generous sponsors and individuals who believe in my potential, to please help me represent my country with pride and honour.”
