In celebration of this past Youth Day, national team goalkeeper and football star, Ronwen Williams, in association with the Ronwen 30 Foundation, returned to his hometown of Gqeberha to inspire and empower the next generation of athletes.
The Ronwen 30 Foundation, pioneered by Williams, uses the power of football to educate, encourage, and uplift the South African youth.
During his visit, Williams conducted an exclusive coaching clinic aimed at nurturing and developing young athletic talent. The event was held at his alma mater, Gelvandale Primary School in Gqeberha, and attracted over 200 children from four different schools in the northern areas. Aspiring footballers were eager to learn from one of the country’s top sports professionals, with additional guidance provided by 20 licensed football coaches.
This influential initiative was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Adidas and other benefactors. Williams’s return to Gelvandale Primary School not only highlighted his commitment to giving back to his community, but also underscored the importance of supporting youth development through sport.
“Coming back to Gqeberha, and giving back to the community that shaped my early career, is incredibly rewarding,” said Williams. “I am dedicated to helping the next generation of athletes to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams. Adidas’s sponsorship played a crucial role in the event’s success, providing high-quality training gear and equipment for the schools, and for them to continue playing the game, long after the clinics had finished.”
Adidas Football Sports Marketing, Bob Maphosa, said, “We are proud to support Ronwen Williams in his mission to develop young footballers in Gqeberha. At Adidas, we believe in the power of sport to change lives, and initiatives like these are at the heart of our community engagement efforts.”
Parents and community members expressed gratitude for Williams’ commitment to youth development.
“Having a role model like Ronwen Williams work directly with our children is an incredible opportunity. His dedication and success are truly inspiring,” said Gelvandale Primary School principal, Ronald Boggenpoel.
