Nelson Mandela Bay Racing is making sure local fans will get the full racing experience of the biggest weekend of the year.

Africa’s greatest horse race, the R5 million Hollywoodbets Durban July which was run for the first time way back in 1897, will take place at Greyville on Saturday.

As usual, the Fairview track in Greenbushes will play a major role to ensure it is a massive weekend for South African Racing.

An action-packed time at Fairview, leading up to Saturday’s iconic event in Durban, has already started.

There was a meeting of eight races yesterday on the Polytrack. The action will return on Friday with another meeting, but not just any meeting.

Fairview will come alive on Friday with the annual charity race day of the Nomads Golf Club.

All proceeds from the event will go to the local Childhood Cancer Foundation and it is safe to predict the Nomads will be having a ball at the races.

What might not be that easy to predict is which horse will win Friday’s feature race.

The Walmer Handicap tops the bill and is a very competitive affair for fillies and mares over 1 800 metres.

Punters countrywide will be targeting Friday’s Fairview meeting to build up a kitty and have a full go at the enormous betting pools on Saturday.

There will be no live racing at Fairview on Saturday, but local race fans will be eager to return to the venue on July Day.

They will be able to watch the racing, and the rugby clash between the Springboks and Ireland, on television while enjoying the bar and tote facilities.

With the last month of the racing season starting with a bang at Fairview, it is certain that it is going to be a really big one for local fans.

After yesterday’s meeting there are still six more meetings for a hectic and exciting month’s racing at Fairview.

Races coming up later in the month that should not be missed are the Gold Cup on the 12th, and the Champion Juvenile Cup on the 26th.

The race for the East Cape trainers’ title between Gavin Smith and Alan Greeff is again going right down the wire. This duel has been going on for decades but grabs the attention of the country’s racing fans every year.
