The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has issued a warning to residents to be vigilant, following the discovery of the destructive polyphagous shot hole beetle in the area.
The beetle, which originated from South-East Asia, has been detected in a dying tree in Lorraine, Gqeberha, after a concerned resident reported the suspected infestation.
The municipality’s officials confirmed the presence of the beetle, which bores into tree trunks causing decay and eventual death. The beetle has already caused significant damage in KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town, and the municipality is taking proactive measures to prevent its spread.
Public Health Member of Mayoral Committee, Councillor Thsonono Buyeye, warned that the beetle poses a significant threat, as the affected trees become rotten and vulnerable to strong winds, posing a risk to the public and property in the vicinity.
The beetle is identified by its small black or brown body, approximately one millimetre in size, with greyish hairs.
Residents are urged to report any suspected infestations to the municipality on 041 506 1729/11 or email pgibbsrec@mandelametro.gov.za
Special precautions must be taken when removing infested trees, including the use of special chainsaws, covering the material with a tarpaulin or canvas, and transporting it to a safe area for burning, to prevent further spreading of the pest.
