THE Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Councillor Gary van Niekerk, expressed satisfaction at the progress made in electrifying temporary houses in Walmer, where flood-affected families will be relocated soon.

The Metro is accelerating its efforts to ensure outstanding work is completed to bring normality to the lives of the affected.

“We are happy to see work progressing well, as we updated our residents last week about the work that is currently underway, and upcoming developments,” said Van Niekerk. “Teams are on site electrifying the bungalows, and we are happy with the quality of the structures too. Water is already connected, and sanitation services will also be in place by the time the residents move in.”

A total of 20 families will be accommodated in the newly-built temporary shelters in Walmer.

The mayor anticipates that the electrification work will be completed later this month after which the families will move in.

Van Niekerk also mentioned that the Metro is monitoring progress in two sites, Walmer and Kariega, where residents from Lapland will be located.

“We will continue to update the residents on developments so that we are all on the same page and there is no confusion,” he said. “We are waiting for the green light from DEDEAT, but our teams are on standby, and as soon as that has been finalised, we are ready to clear the site and commence with the construction work.”

The mayor expressed gratitude to all stakeholders working with the Metro.
