THE fast-growing Wells Estate community was treated to high quality football on Saturday and Sunday.

Wells Estate used to have their own local football association, and nine teams decided to run their own tournament with the aim of uniting their community once more.

The teams that participated in the tournament were Wells Blue Birds, Manchester United, PE Black Vultures, Amathole FC, Svungu-Vungu, Wells Legends, Bisho Stars, 14 Stars FC and Gqeberha Academy. The tournament was played in a straight knockout system.

On Saturday, Wells Blue Birds faced Manchester who overcame them 2–1 during their entertaining game. The high-flying Vultures had the better of Amathole, eliminating them 2–1 in their tough encounter. The new kids on the block, Svungu-Vungu, earned a hard-fought 1–0 win over Wells Legends. The rookies 14 Stars FC registered a tough 1–0 triumph over the tough Bisho Stars. Vultures advanced to the semi-finals, following their easy 3–1 victory over Gqeberha Academy.

On Sunday, four sides faced off during the semi-finals. Svungu-Vungu exited the tournament with a 4–1 loss to 14 Stars FC. The hot favourites, Vultures, saw hopes shattered in a 5–4 loss on penalties to Manchester United after they shared a full-time 2–2 draw.

In the finals, 14 Stars were crowned the Wells Estate Community Tournament champions, following a well-deserved 2–0 win over Manchester United.
