Deaf Awareness Week which takes place from August 26 to 30 is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
It also highlights the importance of accessibility, and the need for inclusive practices in educational settings.
Greenwood Primary School is offering free hearing screening for the week, from August 26 to 30, Monday to Friday, from 08:30 – 14:00.
“We believe that this initiative will not only educate learners, but also inspire them to become advocates for inclusivity and accessibility,” said Soebeidah Kieviets, Head of the Department of Partially Hearing at Greenwood Primary School.
“Additionally, we will provide resources and guidelines for parents and educators on how to recognise early signs of hearing issues in children, and the steps to take for proper diagnosis and support.”
According to Kieviets, signs of possible hearing loss include daydreaming, speech difficulties, inability to locate the source of sounds, frequent pulling or touching of one or both ears, inappropriate responses to questions, withdrawing from social contact, poor attention span, poor self-image, apparent laziness, history of hearing loss in the family, and academic failure or under-achievement.
