The Kwazakhele Clinic in Nelson Mandela Bay has officially reopened today, September 7, after being temporarily closed due to safety concerns.
According to Eastern Cape Department of Health MEC’s spokesperson, Mkhululi Ndamase, the clinic was temporarily closed on Wednesday, September 4, after healthcare workers were alerted by community members to potential crime targeting the facility.
“However, last night, the police in Nelson Mandela Bay said there was no credible threat of crime in Kwazakhele in the last seven days,” he said.
“The department welcomes the reassurances from the police, hence the decision to reopen the clinic was taken. Residents will now be able to get healthcare services closer to where they live after they had to go to nearby facilities since Wednesday,” he added.
He further added that the Department of Health encourages residents to work with law enforcement agencies and report crimes or plans to commit a crime against healthcare facilities and workers.
“However, we want to caution people not to spread fake news and misinformation that may lead to the closure of government facilities like clinics.”
